Throw Pillows, Rugs, and Curtains… Please!

I get it—buying accessories like throw pillows, rugs, and curtains can feel like an extra chore. It’s one more thing to measure, match, and install. But just like adding salt to the food makes it taste better, adding accessories to your space makes it look yummy! What a terrible comparison, but you got it!

I prepared this blog post to tell you a little bit more about why these detail matters and how to select the right ones to your space.

Why Accessories Matter

Honestly? Because without the right accessories, a room can feel unfinished or lacking in personality. Think of them as the final brushstrokes on a painting—they bring depth, warmth, and cohesiveness. Gosh, the comparisons keep going, huh?

Throw pillows add softness, rugs define spaces, and curtains create an elegant, polished look while also controlling light and privacy.

How to Pick the Right Pieces

Throw Pillows: Layered Comfort & Style

  • Size Matters: Stick with a mix of sizes—larger pillows (20-24 inches) anchor the sofa, while smaller ones (16-18 inches) add variety.

  • Patterns & Textures: Don’t be afraid to mix and match! Choose a combination of solids, geometric patterns, and textured fabrics to create depth.

  • Color Coordination: Pick at least one color from your existing decor to tie everything together.

Rugs: Grounding Your Space

  • Size Guide: A rug should be big enough to anchor the furniture. For living rooms, the front legs of your furniture should sit on the rug. In dining areas, ensure the rug extends at least 24 inches beyond the table.

  • Patterns & Colors: Choose something that complements, rather than competes with, the rest of the room. Neutral rugs keep things subtle, while bold patterns make a statement.

  • Texture & Material: Wool rugs add warmth, while jute or sisal brings a natural feel. For high-traffic areas, opt for durable, easy-to-clean materials.

Curtains: Elevating the Room

  • Height & Width: Hang curtains high and wide to make windows look larger. A good rule of thumb is mounting them at least 6 inches above the window frame and extending beyond the sides.

  • Fabric Choices: Light and airy fabrics like linen create a breezy look, while heavier drapes add drama and insulation.

  • Color & Pattern: If your room already has bold elements, go for neutral curtains. If your space needs excitement, choose a pattern or rich hue to add contrast.

Final Thoughts

Accessories may feel like an afterthought, but they’re the secret sauce that makes a space feel intentional and complete. A well-placed rug, thoughtfully arranged throw pillows, and properly hung curtains can transform your space from "nice" to "magazine-worthy." So, yes—it’s one more thing to do, but trust me, it’s worth it!

I can't wait to see you again!

Grateful,

Carol Alda
